Service and location pages that don’t look like spam
Why one page per service helps local search, when an area page is honest and when it becomes a doorway page Google penalises, and what each page needs.
A lot of small-business websites have one page called “Services” with six bullet points. Someone searching for one of those six things has to find it on that page, and Google has to guess which bullet matters. A page per service fixes both.
01 · Why one page per service works
When a page is about one thing, it can answer the questions people actually ask about that thing: what it costs, how long it takes, what is included, what the result looks like. That makes it more useful to the person searching and clearer to Google. It also gives you something specific to link to from your Google Business Profile, your ads and your WhatsApp replies.
02 · When an area page is honest
An area page makes sense when you genuinely serve that area and have something specific to say about it: projects you have done there, how you get there, local details that matter to the job. A home-services business working across Koramangala, HSR Layout and Bellandur might have real work to show in each.
03 · When it becomes a doorway page
Google’s spam policies describe doorway pages: pages made to rank for similar searches that send people to the same place, including pages targeted at specific cities or regions that funnel everyone to one page (Google spam policies). The giveaway is a set of pages that are identical except for the area name. They don’t help visitors, and they can pull the whole site down.
The test is simple: if you deleted the area name, would the page still say anything different from the others? If not, don’t publish it.
04 · What each service page needs
- A clear title and heading in the words customers use, such as “Kitchen interiors in HSR Layout”, not “Our Solutions”.
- The answer first: what you do, for whom, and roughly what it involves.
- Proof: photos of real work, a short case, or reviews that mention this service.
- The questions people ask, answered plainly: price range or what drives it, time, process.
- One clear action: call, WhatsApp or a short form, the same on every page.
- Your name, address and phone number matching your Business Profile.
05 · Start small
Three good service pages beat thirty thin ones. Start with the services that bring most of your revenue, add areas only where you have real work to show, and add more pages as you collect real projects and reviews to put on them.
A page for each service you offer helps people and Google find you. Fifty copies of one page with a different area name swapped in is a doorway page, and Google treats it as spam.
