Local SEO for Bengaluru businesses, without the myths
How Google picks the three businesses on the map: relevance, distance and prominence. What a Bengaluru business can actually change, and how long it takes.
Search for “dentist near me” in Indiranagar and Google shows a map with three businesses before any website. Search the same thing in Whitefield and you get three different ones. That box is where most local enquiries start, and it works differently from the normal results below it.
01 · How Google chooses the three
Google says local results are based mainly on three things (Google Business Profile Help):
- Relevance: how well your Business Profile matches what the person searched for.
- Distance: how far you are from the person searching, or from the area they named.
- Prominence: how well known your business is, from reviews and their rating to links and mentions across the web.
The same page says plainly that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Anyone who promises “top three on Maps” is promising something Google says can’t be bought.
02 · You can’t move your shop, so work on the other two
Distance is fixed. You can’t be close to everyone in a city the size of Bengaluru. That is why a clinic in HSR Layout won’t show up for someone searching in Hebbal, however good its profile is, and why that is fine: those people were never likely to travel to you.
Relevance and prominence are where the work is:
- Relevance: the right primary category, your real services listed, a description that says what you do, and a page on your website for each service.
- Prominence: a steady flow of genuine reviews, replies to them, and your name, address and phone number listed the same way on your site, your profile and the main directories.
03 · What a sensible first month looks like
- Fix the profile. Correct category, hours, services, photos of the actual place and work. (Business Profile guidelines)
- Match your details everywhere. The same business name, address and phone number on your website, profile and listings.
- Give each service its own page. One page per service you want to be found for, written for the person searching.
- Start asking for reviews. A short link sent after every job, every time. Not a one-off campaign.
- Start measuring. Calls, direction requests and website clicks from the profile, plus enquiries from the site.
04 · How long it takes
Expect some movement in two to three months and meaningful results in three to six. It depends on how competitive your category is in your part of the city, and on how many reviews you collect along the way. A new profile in a busy category takes longer than a well-established one that just needed cleaning up.
05 · What to measure
Rankings move every time someone searches from a different street, so a single ranking screenshot tells you little. The numbers that matter are the ones your profile and site already record: calls, direction requests, website visits from local search, and the enquiries that follow. If those go up month on month, the work is working.
Google ranks local results on three things: how relevant you are to the search, how close you are, and how well known you are. You can only work on two of them.
